The Lost Wonderland Diaries

By J. Scott Savage

Book Description

Lewis Carroll, author of the classic book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, secretly recorded the true story of his actual travels to Wonderland in four journals which have been lost to the world…until now.

Celia and Tyrus discover the legendary Lost Diaries of Wonderland and fall into a portal that pulls them into the same fantasy world as the White Rabbit and the Mad Hatter. However, Wonderland has vastly changed. Some of the characters that Tyrus remembers from the book have been transformed into angry monsters.

Helped by the Cheshire Cat and a new character, Sylvan, a young rabbit, Celia and Tyrus desperately work to solve puzzles and riddles, looking for a way out of Wonderland. But the danger increases when the Queen of Hearts begins hunting them, believing the two young visitors hold the key to opening multiple portals to multiple worlds, and she will stop at nothing to capture them.

Will the crazed creatures of Wonderland escape into the real world? Can Celia and Tyrus stop them and save both worlds? Or will they be trapped in Wonderland forever?

Review by THE BOOK BREAK host, Melissa Dalton Martinez:

“Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll’s prolific diaries inspired the magic of Wonderland. But when four of those diaries vanished at Carroll’s death, some delightfully mysterious stories died with him.

Or did they?

Not if bestselling author J. Scott Savage can help it. Now you can explore Wonderland in The Lost Wonderland Diaries, written after Savage wondered, What if we had those diaries? And what if Wonderland wasn’t something Lewis Carroll made up, but a history of what he saw when he visited Wonderland? This whimsical adventure is Savage’s brilliantly creative answer.

Within its pages, come face to face with something monstrous that wants to escape Wonderland—and a cast of spirited characters, classic and new, who are determined to stop it from invading our world. You’ll cheer as Celia battles her dyslexia in a way that will bring insight and understanding to what it’s like to live with a disability—and inspiration as you see how Celia confronts hers.

Discussion questions at the end of the book are perfect for parents and teachers who want to help children and students take a deep dive into an unforgettable, action-packed story.”

Review by Jennifer Hutchins

The perfect book for fans of Alice in Wonderland! I loved reading The Lost Wonderland Diaries by J. Scott Savage. I’ve read other Wonderland retellings before and I definitely feel like this captured the spirit of the original book perfectly. I loved revisiting all of the original characters (The Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, Queen of Hearts etc,) but each with a twist!

The two new heroes, Celia and Tyrus, are wonderful in their own ways. I love how the author used their individual strengths to solve their predicaments in Wonderland— Celia’s dyslexia but gift with numbers and logic and Tyrus’s love of words and reading. The different puzzles throughout the book were also really fun to read and try to figure out on my own!

Really the only critique I had when reading was the pacing. I think the focus was really heavy on throwbacks to the original series and reintroducing iconic characters. I found myself wanting to move faster with the new plot of this book. I think more frequent clues and plot movements sooner in the book would have been more engaging for me personally.

Overall, a fun read with great characters you really want to root for!
